Target Information
Rat pyridoxal kinase catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of vitamin B6 forms, converting pyridoxal, pyridoxine and pyridoxamine into their 5'-phosphate esters. This reaction targets the active coenzyme pool, driving over 140 PLP-dependent enzymes involved in amino-acid, neurotransmitter and heme synthesis. The kinase is cytosolic and highly expressed in liver, brain and erythrocytes, where rapid PLP turnover occurs. Its unique ATP-grasp fold offers a conserved, catalytic-face epitope ideal for antibody generation; anti-pyridoxal-kinase immunoreagents therefore detect B6-metabolizing cells in situ without cross-reacting with other kinases or PLP-binding proteins.
