Rat fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a 21-kDa secreted metabolic hormone predominantly expressed in rat liver, brown adipose tissue, and jejunum. It exerts biological effects via FGFR1/3-β-Klotho co-receptor complexes, activating signaling cascades that modulate lipid oxidation, glucose uptake, and ketone body synthesis. Critical for maintaining rat metabolic homeostasis during fasting or nutrient stress, it enhances insulin sensitivity, reduces hepatic lipid accumulation, and regulates energy expenditure. Dysregulated expression associates with hyperlipidemia, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, and obesity-related insulin resistance in rat models.
