Target Information

Bovine defensin beta 1 (BD-1) is a 6-kDa cationic antimicrobial peptide widely expressed in bovine mucosal tissues-including the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal epithelium, mammary glands, and genital mucosa. It belongs to the beta-defensin family, featuring a conserved cysteine-stabilized alpha-beta fold that enables binding to bacterial, viral, and fungal membranes, disrupting their integrity and inhibiting pathogen proliferation. Beyond direct antimicrobial activity, it modulates bovine innate immune responses by chemoattracting immune cells and enhancing mucosal barrier function. Abundant in tissues exposed to environmental pathogens, it serves as a frontline defense in livestock. As a key mediator of bovine mucosal immunity, BD-1 is a critical target for studying livestock infectious diseases, immune regulation, and veterinary antimicrobial strategies.
