Mouse Claudin 2 is a 23 kDa tetraspan tight-junction protein that forms paracellular cation-selective pores between epithelial cells. Expressed in renal proximal tubules, small intestine, and bile ducts, it governs water and Na⁺ reabsorption while maintaining barrier integrity. Claudin 2 is up-regulated during development and osmotic stress, modulating permeability without disrupting junction stability. As a key determinant of ion-selective paracellular transport, it is an important target for studies of renal physiology, intestinal absorption, and epithelial barrier disorders.
