Target Information
Rat smoothelin (SMTN) is a 59-kDa cytoskeletal protein specifically expressed in rat visceral and vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs), localized to the contractile apparatus. It interacts with actin filaments and myosin, stabilizing SMC cytoskeletal integrity and enhancing contractile efficiency. Critical for maintaining vascular tone, gastrointestinal motility, and urinary bladder function in rats, it regulates SMC differentiation and phenotypic modulation. Dysregulated expression associates with vascular remodeling (e.g., atherosclerosis, hypertension), intestinal dysmotility, and SMC hyperplasia in rat models. As a key mediator of smooth muscle contractility and tissue homeostasis, rat SMTN is a critical target for studying vascular and visceral smooth muscle pathobiology, and developing therapeutics for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders.
