Target Information
Rat activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) is a 38-kDa basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor widely expressed in rat tissues-with enriched levels in the liver, skeletal muscle, kidney, and brain. It is a key mediator of the unfolded protein response (UPR) and integrated stress response (ISR), activated by endoplasmic reticulum stress, amino acid deprivation, or oxidative stress. Upon activation, it binds to cis-acting elements in target gene promoters to regulate expression of genes involved in protein folding, amino acid metabolism, autophagy, and cell survival, restoring cellular homeostasis or triggering apoptosis if stress is irreversible. Critical for adapting to physiological and pathological stress, it modulates tissue repair and disease progression. As a central stress-responsive transcription factor, rat ATF4 is a critical target for studying metabolic disorders, neurodegeneration, and stress-related pathologies.
