Target Information
Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M), encoded by the equine A2M gene, exhibits a broad enzyme specificity. The liver is the primary producer of A2M. Additionally, it is locally synthesized by macrophages, fibroblasts, and adrenocortical cells. It effectively inhibits enzymatic action on macromolecules, although it does not significantly affect small molecular weight synthetic substrates. Interestingly, both horse and human alpha-2-macroglobulin share immunochemical relatedness, as confirmed by specific antisera targeting both species' A2M.
