Target Information

TBARS (Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances) serves as a biomarker for detecting lipid peroxidation and is commonly used to indicate oxidative stress. In mouse models, elevated TBARS levels often correlate with cell membrane damage, oxidative stress, and tissue injury. In iron-overloaded mice, TBARS levels increased significantly, suggesting that iron-induced oxidative stress enhances lipid peroxidation. For instance, a study found a 74% increase in TBARS levels in iron-overloaded mice compared to normal mice, while treatment with the antioxidant DBME significantly reduced TBARS to normal levels. This demonstrates that TBARS is a sensitive indicator for assessing oxidative stress due to iron overload. Various drugs and natural products have been investigated for their ability to reduce TBARS levels and alleviate oxidative stress. For example, apocynin significantly lowered TBARS levels in the plasma of D5−/− mice and restored NADPH oxidase activity, indicating its antioxidant properties.
