Target Information
Indian hedgehog protein is crucial for embryonic morphogenesis; it regulates endochondral skeleton formation and the development of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), photoreceptors, and periocular tissues. The C-terminal portion of the Indian hedgehog protein precursor exhibits autoproteolysis and cholesterol transferase activity. During mouse embryonic development, Ihh functions as a vital endoderm signaling molecule, essential for initiating hematopoiesis and angiogenesis. Research indicates that Ihh can reprogram embryonic precursor cells to differentiate into hematopoietic and endothelial cells. Additionally, Ihh influences cell fate determination and tissue morphogenesis by activating downstream signaling pathways such as Patched, Gli, and Smoothened. During the embryonic stage, Ihh expression is predominantly found in early chondrocytes, where it regulates their differentiation and proliferation through a negative feedback mechanism.
