Neuromedin-B stimulates the contraction of smooth muscle and induces sighing by directly targeting the pre-Botzinger complex, a cluster of neurons in the ventrolateral medulla responsible for inspiration during respiratory activity. In mice, neuromedin-B serves multiple physiological roles, such as regulating energy balance, endocrine function, pancreatic exocrine secretion, and neurotransmitter transmission. It is expressed in the hypothalamus and is linked to energy balance and feeding behavior. Research indicates that neuromedin-B acts in the hypothalamus through its receptor (NMUR2), where it inhibits food intake and boosts energy expenditure. This effect is significantly reduced in NMUR2 knockout mice, suggesting that neuromedin-B exerts its anti-obesity effects via NMUR2. Additionally, neuromedin-B is expressed in the anterior insular cortex of mice and is involved in regulating emotions and cognitive functions.
