Target Information

Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein that facilitates the transport of oxygen in red blood cells. It is composed of four protein subunits, each containing an iron molecule. Hemoglobin binds to oxygen in the lungs and carries it through the bloodstream to tissues. It also helps transport carbon dioxide (a waste product) from tissues back to the lungs for exhalation. Measurements of hemoglobin concentrations are used to determine whether sows are anemic.
