Target Information

Rat citrate synthase (CS) is a 48-kDa homodimeric enzyme exclusively localized in the mitochondrial matrix of all rat tissues, with elevated expression in high-energy-demand organs (heart, skeletal muscle, kidney). It catalyzes the rate-limiting reaction of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, condensing acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate to form citrate-bridging cytosolic glycolysis with mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. By regulating carbon flux into the TCA cycle, it modulates ATP production, fatty acid biosynthesis, and cellular redox balance, supporting rat physiological processes (e.g., tissue growth, exercise endurance) and adapting to metabolic stress (e.g., nutrient deprivation, mitochondrial impairment). As a core mediator of rat bioenergetics and a canonical mitochondrial marker, CS is a critical target for studying metabolic disorders, mitochondrial pathologies, and tissue energy homeostasis.
