Target Information

Prokineticin-2 is likely an output molecule from the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), responsible for conveying behavioral circadian rhythms and may also play a local role within the SCN to synchronize outputs. It is also known for its strong ability to contract gastrointestinal (GI) smooth muscle. In mice, Prokineticin-2 holds extensive and significant biological roles, including in neurogenesis, endocrine regulation, circadian rhythm maintenance, cardiovascular repair, metabolic equilibrium, and immune response. A deficiency in PK2 results in a marked reduction in the olfactory bulb volume, disruption of its normal structure, and an accumulation of neural progenitor cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ), thereby impacting neurogenesis. In the hypothalamus, PK2 is closely associated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, and its absence can cause reproductive issues akin to human Kallmann syndrome, characterized by olfactory abnormalities and defects in GnRH neuron migration.
