Target Information
The Gap Junction Alpha-1 Protein, known as Gja1, functions as a regulatory protein for bladder capacity by forming part of a gap junction. A gap junction is composed of clusters of closely packed pairs of transmembrane channels, known as connexons, which facilitate the diffusion of low molecular weight materials between adjacent cells. In mice, Gja1 serves multiple functions across a variety of tissues and organs, including bones, the reproductive system, heart, hearing, and endometrium. Specifically, within bone tissue, Gja1 enables communication between bone cells via gap junctions, playing a critical role in maintaining bone density and responding to mechanical stress. Research indicates that mice lacking Gja1 experience reduced bone density in osteocytes and osteoblasts, particularly when subjected to mechanical loading, and this effect becomes more pronounced.
