Target Information

In mice, orexin plays a pivotal role in various functions, including regulating sleep-wake cycles, body temperature, energy metabolism, cognitive function, and behavioral responses. These functions are facilitated by its influence on specific neuronal networks in the hypothalamus and other brain regions and are controlled through various signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms. Orexin affects the circadian rhythm by activating specific neurons, such as Period1-EGFP-expressing cells in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), particularly during the night. Additionally, orexin regulates the circadian rhythm in the SCN by inhibiting GABAergic signaling and directly activating potassium leak ion channels.
