Target Information
Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) serves various physiological roles in mice, including the regulation of neurotransmitters, detoxification of poisons, metabolic regulation, and influences on obesity and diabetes. BChE contributes to the regulation of neurotransmitter levels by hydrolyzing acetylcholine (ACh). Although acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the primary enzyme responsible for terminating neurotransmitter action in the central nervous system, BChE can compensate by hydrolyzing acetylcholine in AChE-deficient mice, thus maintaining neurotransmitter balance. Additionally, BChE plays a crucial role in detoxifying poisons in mice. For instance, BChE protects nerve cells from the toxic effects of organophosphorus pesticides like diisopropylfluorophosphate. In the absence of AChE, mice exhibit increased BChE activity, which enhances their tolerance to these neurotoxic substances.
