Target Information
In mice, the primary function of PIINP (Procollagen III N-terminal propeptide) is to serve as a biomarker for tissue fibrosis, particularly in muscle and liver. An elevated concentration of PIINP suggests the occurrence and progression of fibrosis. Studies indicate that plasma PIINP levels are significantly increased in mdx mice, a model commonly used to study muscular dystrophy, suggesting its potential to reflect the extent of muscle and liver fibrosis. The PIINP concentration in mdx mice across various ages consistently surpasses that of control groups, mirroring the trend of PCPE-1, another fibrosis biomarker. This indicates that PIINP is an effective indicator for assessing tissue fibrosis.
