Target Information
4-Hydroxynonenal (HNE) is a lipid peroxidation product prevalent in various organisms, including mice and humans. In mice, HNE is metabolized more efficiently in the liver but less so in lung and brain tissues, resulting in higher HNE levels in these areas and potentially causing tissue damage. HNE reduces its toxicity by binding with glutathione (GSH) to form glutathione-4-HNE (GS-HNE); however, this detoxification process is less active in lung and brain tissues, leading to HNE accumulation and possible cell damage. As a primary product of lipid peroxidation, HNE exacerbates cellular oxidative stress by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In the acute lung injury (ALI) model, elevated HNE levels are closely linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, indicating that HNE may contribute to disease progression by affecting mitochondrial function and antioxidant defenses.
