Target Information
In mice, Nitric Oxide Synthase 3 (Nos3), also known as endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), is a key enzyme that catalyzes the production of nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine. NO is a crucial signaling molecule involved in vasodilation, blood flow regulation, and vascular homeostasis. Nos3 is primarily expressed in endothelial cells and plays essential roles in heart development, smooth muscle function, and the regulation of metal ion transport. It is also involved in immune responses and has been implicated in various diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. In mouse models, Nos3 overexpression has been shown to improve hemodynamics in arteriovenous fistulas, highlighting its potential therapeutic applications. Additionally, Nos3 is associated with neuroprotection and tumor biology, making it a valuable target for research in multiple fields.
