Target Information
Myeloperoxidase is encoded by the MPO gene in horses. The heme enzyme MPO is a protein found in leukocytes such as polymorphonuclear neutrophils, monocytes, and subpopulations of tissue macrophages. It is stored in azurophilic granules and catalyzes the conversion of H2O2 generated by the neutrophil oxidative burst with halides, mainly chloride, to hypochlorous acid and other reactive oxidants. MPO is most abundantly expressed in neutrophils (a subtype of white blood cells), and produces hypohalous acids to carry out their antimicrobial activity, including hypochlorous acid, the sodium salt of which is the chemical in bleach.
