Mouse cystathionine is a key intermediate in the transsulfuration pathway, linking methionine metabolism to cysteine and glutathione synthesis. It is constitutively generated in liver, brain, and kidney tissues through condensation of homocysteine with serine, a reaction catalyzed by cystathionine-β-synthase. The metabolite serves as a rapid-turnover pool that safeguards cellular redox balance and supplies sulfur for taurine and coenzyme A production. Its basal levels are low in plasma but rise quickly under oxidative or inflammatory stress, making it a sensitive read-out of sulfur-amino-acid homeostasis.
