Target Information

Mouse mucin 1 (MUC1) is a large type-I trans-membrane glycoprotein carrying a tandem-repeat array of 20-aa PTS sequences heavily O-glycosylated within the extracellular domain. These repeats target the apical surface of ductal epithelia, forming a protective barrier that lubricates and shields plasma membranes from enzymatic and mechanical stress. The cytoplasmic tail contains a conserved YEKV motif that links MUC1 to actin and mediates signal-transduction events. Its highly immunogenic tandem-repeat region presents a unique, species-restricted epitope ideal for antibody generation; anti-MUC1 immunoreagents detect both soluble and membrane-bound forms in milk, serum and tissue sections without cross-reacting with other mucins, providing a precise read-out of epithelial integrity and glycosylation status.
