It catalyzes the rate-limiting step of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, condensing acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate to form citrate-linking glycolysis to mitochondrial energy production. By regulating acetyl-CoA flux into the TCA cycle, it controls ATP generation, fatty acid synthesis, and cellular redox homeostasis.
