It was initially identified due to its association with Wilms tumor, a pediatric kidney cancer. Wilms Tumor Protein Homolog is encoded by the WT1 gene in pigs. It is essential for the development of the mammalian urogenital system. It has a close association with the development and function of the porcine kidney, ovary and testis.
