Target Information
Aquaporin-1 forms a water channel that facilitates the movement of water across cell membranes, playing a vital role in maintaining water homeostasis across various tissues. In mice, aquaporin 1 (AQP1) primarily functions in water transport across membranes, but its role extends beyond this. AQP1 is a water channel protein widely expressed in multiple tissues and organs, including the kidneys, intestines, lungs, heart, retina, and specific regions of the nervous system. In the mouse intestine, AQP1 is notably expressed, especially in the ileum and jejunum of the small intestine. Studies indicate that AQP1 is present in the serosal layer, mucosal layer, and enteric nervous system of the intestine. Its principal function is to facilitate water transport through channels, thereby maintaining the water-salt balance and mucosal function in the intestine.
