Target Information

SOD2 (superoxide dismutase 2) is an antioxidant enzyme found in mitochondria, primarily responsible for converting superoxide (O2•−) generated by mitochondria into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This process protects mitochondria from oxidative stress damage. In mice, SOD2 plays crucial physiological roles; its absence or reduced expression can lead to numerous pathological and physiological issues. Mice lacking SOD2 often exhibit severe dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and die shortly after birth due to the buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cardiac mitochondria, resulting in cardiomyocyte dysfunction and cell death. Moreover, SOD2 deficiency impacts the activity of respiratory chain complexes in the heart, leading to abnormal energy metabolism. In neurons, the lack of SOD2 heightens oxidative stress, triggering neurodegenerative changes such as neuronal damage, glial cell activation, and spongiform degeneration in the cerebellum and brain. These alterations are closely linked to movement disorders, cognitive dysfunction, and premature death in mice.
