Target Information
Transferrin receptor protein 2 facilitates the cellular uptake of transferrin-bound iron in a manner that does not depend on iron. It may play a role in iron metabolism, liver cell function, and red blood cell differentiation. In mice, the primary role of TfR2 is to regulate iron uptake and maintain iron homeostasis by detecting the body's iron levels and collaborating with factors like hepcidin to preserve normal iron metabolic balance. Mutations or deletions in TfR2 can lead to iron metabolism disorders, resulting in diseases such as hereditary hemochromatosis and liver dysfunction. Studies have shown that mice with TfR2 mutations exhibit phenotypes similar to human HH3, characterized by increased liver iron accumulation, elevated serum iron saturation, and abnormal liver function.
