Target Information
Spermine oxidase is a flavoenzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine. It can also utilize N1-acetylspermine and spermidine as substrates, with varying affinities depending on the specific isoform and experimental conditions. This enzyme plays a crucial role in regulating the intracellular concentration of polyamines and can influence cellular sensitivity to antitumor polyamine analogs. In mice, SMOX has several important functions, including regulating polyamine metabolism, contributing to neurotoxicity and neuroprotection, modulating inflammatory responses, inducing oxidative stress and apoptosis, and affecting the pathological processes of renal fibrosis and muscle tissue. In mouse models, changes in SMOX expression significantly impact neuronal functions. For instance, overexpression of SMOX in mice leads to increased H2O2 levels in the cerebral cortex, resulting in impaired neuronal structure and function, which in turn heightens sensitivity to brain injury.
