Target Information
Vascular Cell Adhesion Protein 1 (VCAM-1) is a cell adhesion glycoprotein primarily found on the surface of endothelial cells, essential for immune surveillance and inflammation. It serves as a crucial regulator of leukocyte adhesion to the endothelium by interacting with various integrins. During inflammatory responses, VCAM-1 binds to ligands on activated endothelial cells, triggering the activation of calcium channels and the plasma membrane-associated small GTPase RAC1, which facilitates leukocyte transendothelial migration. In mice, VCAM-1 is crucial for mediating adhesion between vascular endothelial cells and leukocytes, playing a vital role in the development of inflammatory responses, atherosclerosis, diabetes-related vascular lesions, and other diseases. In ApoE-deficient mice, VCAM-1 expression is significantly elevated, contributing to inflammatory cell infiltration and vascular endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerotic plaques.
