Target Information
Aggrecan is a large proteoglycan and a key component of the cartilage matrix, with its core protein playing essential roles in cartilage tissue. The core protein of aggrecan comprises several regions, including an amino-terminal globular domain (G1) that binds to hyaluronic acid (HA), an intermediate globular domain (G2), and a carboxyl-terminal glycosaminoglycan (GAG) linker region (G3). In mice, the core protein of aggrecan is shorter and lacks the HA-heparan sulfate (KS)-rich region, yet it can still form a complex with HA, endowing it with water absorption and lubrication capabilities. Aggrecan expression is linked to chondrocyte differentiation and cartilage formation. For instance, in cartilage growth plates, aggrecan expression is closely associated with the synthesis of chondroitin sulfate (CS).
