Target Information
Bovine Thiopurine S-Methyltransferase is encoded by the TPMT gene in cattle. It is an S-adenosyl methionine-dependent methyltransferase. TPMT plays a crucial role in metabolizing thiopurine compounds. It transfers a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) to thiopurines, resulting in their inactivation. The byproduct of this reaction is S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine. TPMT is best known for its role in metabolizing drugs such as azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, and 6-thioguanine.
