Target Information

Podocin is essential for regulating glomerular permeability, likely serving as a connector between the plasma membrane and the cytoskeleton. This critical protein is located in the slit diaphragm of glomerular podocytes and is vital for maintaining the glomerular filtration barrier and preventing nephropathy. A deficiency in Podocin (as seen in Nphs2−/− mice) results in severe renal conditions, including proteinuria, tubulopathy, and renal failure. Furthermore, reduced or absent Podocin expression levels cause the disintegration of the slit diaphragm, leading to podocyte apoptosis and dysfunction of the glomerular filtration barrier.
