Target Information
Mitochondrial acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase is an enzyme that plays a key role in the final step of the mitochondrial beta-oxidation pathway-an aerobic process that breaks down fatty acids into acetyl-CoA. It utilizes free coenzyme A/CoA to catalyze the thiolytic cleavage of medium- to long-chain 3-oxoacyl-CoAs, producing acetyl-CoA and a fatty acyl-CoA that is two carbon atoms shorter. In mice, ACAT1 is primarily expressed in macrophages and contributes to the formation of foam cells, a fundamental characteristic of atherosclerotic lesions.
