Target Information
Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule-associated protein essential for the initial stages of neuronal dispersion and cortex lamination during cerebral cortex development. It may function by competing with the neuronal protein kinase DCLK1 for binding to a target protein, potentially participating in a signaling pathway critical for neuronal interactions before and during migration, possibly involving calcium ion-dependent signal transduction. Additionally, DCX may collaborate with PAFAH1B1/LIS-1 in a distinct yet overlapping signaling pathway that facilitates neuronal migration. In DCX-deficient mice, frequent spontaneous epileptic seizures are observed, linked to the immaturity and reduced inhibitory input to hippocampal cortical neurons. Furthermore, these mice exhibit delayed neuronal migration and morphological abnormalities in forebrain development, underscoring the vital role of DCX in proper neuronal migration and cortical organization.
