Target Information
Neuroglobin is a monomeric globin possessing a bis-histidyl six-coordinate heme-iron atom, enabling it to bind to dioxygen, carbon monoxide, and nitric oxide. Although it might aid in oxygen transport and enhance availability to metabolically active neuronal tissues, its limited presence in tissues and high affinity for dioxygen could constrain its oxygen-releasing capability. In mice, the primary functions of neuroglobin (Ngb) involve neuroprotection, antioxidation, oxygen supply, and anti-apoptosis. In cerebral ischemia models, mice overexpressing Ngb demonstrate significantly reduced infarct sizes and improved functional recovery.
