Target Information
In mice, Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class II molecules are crucial for the immune system, particularly in the development and function of CD4+ T cells. These molecules are heterodimeric cell surface proteins made up of α and β chains and are primarily found on the surface of antigen-presenting cells, such as B cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Their primary role is to initiate adaptive immune responses by presenting antigenic peptide fragments to CD4+ T cells. The presence of MHC class II molecules in the thymus is critical for the maturation of CD4+ T cells. Research has demonstrated that the expression of MHC class II molecules in thymic cortical epithelial cells and medullary cells is integral to the maturation process of selective T cells. Mice that lack MHC class II molecules exhibit a significant decrease in CD4+ T cells within the thymus.
