Ficolin-3 is a pattern recognition molecule that identifies specific glycosyl structures, such as N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), on the surface of pathogens and activates the complement system to aid in their clearance. It can bind to a variety of bacteria and fungi, including Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, through its sugar-binding properties. In addition to its role in pathogen defense, Ficolin-3 is significant in tumor suppression. Research indicates that Ficolin-3 can promote ferroptosis in liver cancer cells by downregulating monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) synthesis via the IR/SREBP pathway. This process inhibits tumor growth by reducing the expression and activity of fatty acid synthase (FASN) and decreasing the level of intracellular lipid peroxidation.
