Target Information
Hedgehog-interacting protein (HIP) modulates Hedgehog signaling in various cell types, including those in the brain and lungs, through direct interaction with Hedgehog family members. In its soluble form, HIP inhibits Sonic Hedgehog (Shh)-induced differentiation in the fibroblast cell line C3H/10T1/2. In mice, HIP's primary role is to inhibit the Hedgehog signaling pathway by competitively binding with the Hedgehog ligand, Ptch-1. This regulation affects processes such as cell fate determination, tissue patterning, and disease development. In mouse embryos, HIP is expressed in cells located near Shh-expressing cells, indicating that HIP may inhibit the Hedgehog signaling pathway by competing for binding with the Shh ligand, Ptch-1.
