Target Information
Cerberus is a cytokine potentially involved in anterior neural induction and somite formation during embryogenesis, primarily through inhibiting BMP signaling. It regulates Nodal signaling during gastrulation and influences the formation and patterning of the primitive streak. During mouse embryonic development, Cerberus is expressed predominantly in the anterior germ layer (anterior primitive endoderm), where its primary function is to inhibit Nodal and BMP-4 signaling. This inhibition prevents these signals from propagating backward, ensuring proper head pattern formation. While Cerberus may indirectly influence heart development by affecting related signaling pathways, direct evidence supporting its central role in heart development is currently lacking.
