CD5 antigen-like is a secreted protein that serves as a vital regulator of lipid synthesis, primarily expressed by macrophages in lymphoid and inflamed tissues. It influences inflammatory responses, such as those seen in infections or atherosclerosis, and can inhibit the size of lipid droplets in adipocytes. In mice, CD5L fulfills numerous roles, including immune regulation, managing inflammatory responses, protecting the liver, inhibiting fibrosis, and influencing disease progression. It is particularly crucial in immune regulation, affecting inflammation and immune responses. For instance, in the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, mice lacking CD5L exhibited milder symptoms and a decreased frequency of CD4+ T cells maturing into pro-inflammatory GM-CSF+IL-17A+ cells, underscoring CD5L's significant role in controlling T cell differentiation and the inflammatory response.
