Target Information
The primary function of pro-vasopressin in mice is to regulate the renal collecting duct's response to hyperosmotic stimulation, maintaining water-salt balance by promoting the synthesis and secretion of antidiuretic hormone. Pro-vasopressin mRNA and protein are detected in the renal collecting duct, with their expression levels significantly increasing under hyperosmotic conditions, such as NaCl treatment. In renal collecting duct cells (IMCDs), pro-vasopressin is activated through specific signaling pathways, including the upregulation of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) expression, which enhances water reabsorption. The synthesis and secretion of pro-vasopressin in the renal collecting duct involve a specific enzymatic cleavage process. Research has shown that pro-vasopressin is cleaved into the active form of antidiuretic hormone (AVP) within the renal collecting duct, which is further broken down into neuropeptide II and copeptin. This process underscores the critical role of pro-vasopressin in osmoregulation and fluid balance.
