Target Information

The proton-coupled zinc antiporter SLC30A3 likely facilitates the transport of zinc ions from the cytoplasm into synaptic vesicles, playing a role in maintaining zinc ion homeostasis in the brain. Known as ZnT3, this zinc transporter primarily ensures zinc homeostasis within synaptic vesicles. In mice, SLC30A3 is involved in various functions, including cognitive function, neuroprotection, metabolic regulation, and reproductive processes. Mice lacking ZnT3 (ZnT3 knockout) experience a significant decline in cognitive abilities, particularly in learning and memory. In the hippocampus, the absence of ZnT3 reduces synaptic zinc levels, adversely affecting synaptic plasticity and neuronal function.
