Target Information

Gastrin prompts the gastric mucosa to produce and secrete hydrochloric acid and stimulates the pancreas to release its digestive enzymes. Additionally, it encourages smooth muscle contraction and enhances blood flow and water secretion in the stomach and intestines. As the primary driver of gastric acid secretion, gastrin stimulates hydrochloric acid production by targeting parietal cells. Mice lacking gastrin exhibit a marked decrease in basal gastric acid secretion and a diminished response to histamine, cholinergic, and gastrin stimulation. In mouse models with Helicobacter pylori infection or those treated with chemical carcinogens, increased gastrin levels are linked to gastric mucosal hyperplasia and the progression of gastric cancer.
