Target Information
Matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE) plays a crucial role in regulating the excretion of renal phosphate and uric acid. It also influences bone mineralization by osteoblasts and cartilage mineralization by chondrocytes. MEPE is predominantly expressed in mineralized tissues, with its C-terminal ASARM peptide segment, rich in acidic, serine, and arginine residues, being its key functional region. Research indicates that MEPE promotes osteoblast differentiation and mineralization by inhibiting the release of mineralization inhibitors such as PHEX, through interaction with the phosphate-regulated gene PHEX. Beyond these functions, MEPE is also expressed in salivary glands and may contribute to remodeling the extracellular matrix by activating local matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs).
