Target Information

The activation of C5 by a C5 convertase triggers the spontaneous assembly of the late complement components, C5-C9, into the membrane attack complex. C5b features a transient binding site for C6, and the C5b-C6 complex serves as the foundation for assembling the lytic complex. In mice, complement C5 has various functions, including regulating immune responses, promoting tissue repair, and participating in inflammatory processes. Its role in liver regeneration has been established; in the CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity model, C5-deficient mice displayed significant liver regeneration impairment, delayed entry of hepatocytes into the cell cycle, and reduced mitotic activity, all closely linked to decreased expression of genes related to hepatocyte proliferation. However, reintroducing C5 or C5a can significantly restore the regenerative capacity of hepatocytes.
