Target Information
Carboxyhemoglobin forms when hemoglobin binds with carbon monoxide (CO), with a binding affinity approximately 200 times greater than that of oxygen. This significantly reduces the portion of hemoglobin available for oxygen transport in the blood, thereby diminishing its oxygen-carrying capacity and affecting the oxygen supply to tissues and cells. Additionally, CO binding has been shown to inhibit cytochrome oxidase activity, further impairing cellular respiratory function. In mouse models, prolonged CO inhalation causes a notable increase in carboxyhemoglobin levels, highlighting that CO exposure significantly impacts the respiratory system and may damage lung structure and function. Research also indicates that CO metabolites, such as ferroporphyrin and heme oxygenase (HO), may regulate vascular function and inflammatory responses. These metabolites could offer potential benefits for tissue protection and disease treatment in certain situations.
