Target Information
Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a protein that associates with lipid particles, primarily facilitating lipoprotein-mediated lipid transport between organs through plasma and interstitial fluids. As a core component of plasma lipoproteins, APOE is involved in their production, conversion, and clearance. Apolipoproteins are amphipathic molecules that interact with both the lipids in the lipoprotein particle core and the aqueous environment of the plasma. In mice, the role of ApoE extends beyond lipid transport to include neurobiology, immune regulation, and tissue repair. Mice lacking ApoE exhibit severe hypercholesterolemia and are more prone to developing atherosclerosis.
