Target Information

Methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase, mitochondrial, is an enzyme that formylates methionyl-tRNA within mitochondria, playing a vital role in translation initiation. As a key enzyme in the mitochondrial translation process, Mtfmt is responsible for N-methylating the methionine residue on methionine-tRNA, thus facilitating the initiation and elongation of mitochondrial mRNA translation. Studies have shown that Mtfmt knockout mice experience significant metabolic disorders, including reduced glucose tolerance, decreased insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue, and improved liver metabolic health. Additionally, the absence of Mtfmt results in diminished mitochondrial activity and lowered oxidative phosphorylation levels, further impacting energy metabolism.
