Target Information
Inhibins and activins have opposite roles in regulating the secretion of follitropin by the pituitary gland, with inhibins inhibiting and activins activating this process. These proteins are involved in numerous functions, including regulation of hypothalamic and pituitary hormone secretion, gonadal hormone secretion, germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development, and bone growth, depending on their subunit composition. Inhibins generally counteract the functions of activins. The mouse inhibin βC chain is crucial for reproductive system development and its expression is regulated by various cells and tissues, also relating to the onset and progression of certain diseases. During mouse testis development, the inhibin βC subunit is expressed in Sertoli cells, Leydig cells, and spermatogonia, with its expression particularly noted in mature and immature spermatids.
