Target Information
The CD4 gene in cats encodes the Cluster of Differentiation 4 protein. CD4, a glycoprotein, functions as a co-receptor alongside the T-cell receptor (TCR). It is present on the surface of immune cells, including helper T cells, monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Serving as a co-receptor for the TCR, CD4 aids in the communication with antigen-presenting cells. Research has found that FIV infection can lead to abnormal CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio in cats, manifested as a decrease in the number of CD4 cells and impaired function.
